Written and Directed by Preston Robertson-King and Nicole Harker, Escape Artist is a collaborative film that I worked on for our second year stop motion class.

An art thief attempts to steal a work, but is quickly chased throughout a gorgeous, UPA inspired museum, ultimately leading to his downfall.

Animation

With only 10 weeks to make an entire film, shots have to be done within a couple days of setting them up or the film goes behind schedule. Below are the shots I animated:

Fabrication

Along with animating, I also learned a lot of fabrication skills while working on this film. From simple tasks like painting set pieces, to more involved silicone molding and casting, below are some of the duties I had on the film:

Head Process Compilation

Set Painting

This backdrop was used in two shot setups, and I'm super pleased with how dynamic it turned out in the parctical light. It would have been so easy to simply shoot this on green and digitslly comp in a background, but it never would have felt as tangible, and I'm happy to have had the opportunity to create this piece.

Laser Cuts

One of the first things I did was translate all of the designs for frames decorating the museum walls into laser cut files. I started by making the base designs for the frames, keeping them squared off and more generic. Then, as the shots demanded, I warped some to force the perspective, or to simply make them more interesting. The designs were heavily influenced by UPA, so I also played with lumping groups of frames together in interesting ways.
